Pallet Flow Rack

Automatic FIFO stock rotation using gravity rollers. Load from one side, pick from the other. Zero pallet shuffling.

Nevada Licensed Contractor #0039091

Pallet flow rack uses gravity roller conveyors built into the rack structure to move pallets automatically from the loading end to the picking end. This creates a true FIFO (first-in, first-out) system without any manual pallet shuffling. It is the standard solution for perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, and any high-throughput operation where stock rotation is critical.

How Pallet Flow Rack Works

Pallet flow rack is a dynamic storage system with slightly inclined lanes equipped with roller conveyors or wheel tracks. Pallets are loaded at the higher (back) end of the lane and gravity moves them forward to the lower (front) picking position.

When a pallet is removed from the front, the next pallet in line rolls forward automatically to take its place. This guarantees first-in, first-out rotation without any operator intervention. The loading aisle and the picking aisle are on opposite sides of the structure, which separates replenishment traffic from order picking traffic.

Speed controllers (brakes) are built into the roller tracks to regulate how fast pallets travel down the lane. This prevents pallets from slamming into each other and ensures smooth, controlled movement regardless of pallet weight. Lane depths typically range from 2 to 20+ pallets, depending on the application and available floor space.

Benefits of Pallet Flow Rack

Automatic FIFO Rotation

Every pallet is picked in the order it was loaded. No manual rotation needed. Critical for perishable goods and lot-tracked inventory.

Separate Loading and Picking Aisles

Replenishment happens on one side, picking on the other. This eliminates forklift congestion and improves warehouse throughput.

High Density With Full Rotation

Lanes can be 20+ pallets deep while maintaining true FIFO access. More density than selective rack with better rotation than drive-in.

Reduced Labor Costs

Gravity moves the pallets. No forklift re-entry, no repositioning, no wasted trips into deep lanes.

Speed-Controlled Movement

Built-in braking systems control pallet speed down the lane, protecting both the product and the rack structure.

Best Use Cases for Pallet Flow Rack

  • Food and beverage distribution requiring date-code rotation
  • Pharmaceutical warehouses with strict lot tracking
  • High-throughput distribution centers with fast-moving SKUs
  • Cold storage facilities where FIFO compliance is mandatory
  • Manufacturing staging areas feeding production lines
  • Any operation where product expiration or lot control is a priority

Which Rack System Is Right for You?

Pallet flow rack is the best option when FIFO rotation is non-negotiable. It costs more per position than selective or drive-in rack due to the roller conveyor components, but the labor savings and automatic rotation often pay for the difference quickly. If FIFO is not required and you just need density, drive-in or push-back rack will cost less. We will review your rotation requirements and recommend the right system.
